If you’re looking to save more on your energy bill, then a solar battery probably seems like the next step on your journey to NetZero. Solar batteries are great for maximising your solar system and becoming more self-sufficient, here are the grants and rebates available across Australia.
NSW
The NSW Government is helping homeowners in eligible postcodes access interest-free loans to install solar battery systems.
Through this offer, you can get an interest-free loan of up to:
- $14,000 towards a solar PV and battery system (repayable over a range of terms up to 8 years), or
- $9,000 towards retrofitting a battery system to an existing solar PV system (repayable over a range of terms up to 10 years).
This offer does not include solar-only options and is currently being run as a pilot and is available in limited regions until July 31st, 2022.
VIC
Solar Victoria is supporting eligible Victorian households to install a solar battery, by providing a discount up to a maximum of $3,500. Applicants can arrange to have their solar PV panels and battery installed at the same time. However, applicants can only apply for one Solar Victoria rebate.
If you are looking to install a solar battery or solar PV panels and a battery at the same time, you might be interested in the Solar Victoria Virtual Power Plant (VPP) pilot program. A virtual power plant connects households with solar batteries in an energy sharing network, offering added incentives for participation.
In the VPP pilot, solar battery rebates are available until June 30, 2022, at the higher value of $4,174 to customers who choose to join an approved VPP provider.
SA
The Home Battery Scheme gives all grid-connected South Australians access to state government subsidies and low-interest loans to help pay for a home battery system and new solar if required.
Current Home Battery Scheme subsidy levels:
- Energy concession holder – $250 per kWh
- All other households – $150 per kWh
- Maximum subsidy per battery installation – $2,000
The current subsidy is set to a maximum of $3,000 and will only apply to the battery component of the system purchased.
ACT
The ACT Government Household Battery Storage program provides Australian Capital Territory households and businesses with a rebate to install a battery storage unit connected to a new or existing rooftop solar PV system.
The battery rebate for households is $3,500 (excluding GST) or 50% of the battery price (excluding GST) – whichever is lowest.
NT
If you’re a Northern Territory homeowner, business or a not-for-profit organisation, you can apply for a grant through the Home and Business Battery Scheme to buy and install batteries and inverters.
Eligible homeowners and businesses can access a grant of $450 per kilowatt hour of useable battery system capacity, up to a maximum grant of $6,000. The grant is available for battery systems that are on an approved list of battery systems that have been assessed as virtual power plant capable.
QLD
Unfortunately, there are no QLD state government-level (or Federal) rebates for battery storage systems at the time of writing. The most recent program ended on the 30th of June 2019.
However, if you are in an area of QLD (South-East Queensland for example) with AGL, you can become part of their Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Together, the energy drawn from each battery can provide a large bank of controllable solar energy.
WA
Unfortunately, there is currently no home battery rebate scheme in place.
