Find out how to leverage solar rebates in 2024. Government subsidies and incentives are a major opportunity to cut your home or business’s solar or battery system costs.
A government solar incentive or rebate is financial support aimed at encouraging investment in solar power systems by individuals, businesses, and organisations. These incentives, often in the form of tax credits, grants, or rebates, alleviate the initial solar panel installation costs.

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) is an Australian Government program centred on tradable certificates known as small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Qualifying rooftop solar installations are granted STCs, which offer a subsidy to households and businesses adopting these renewable energy technologies.
The SRES is accessible to eligible households across Australia. The quantity of STCs you receive is determined by the anticipated electricity production of your solar system until 2030,
which hinges on factors including the system’s size (up to 100 kW) and the climate zone of installation.
Different states, territories, and certain local government areas offer subsidy programs aimed at assisting with the initial expenses associated with solar and battery installations. These incentives operate alongside Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
What are STCs?
The calculation of these certificates is tied to the system’s projected renewable energy output. As per the Clean Energy Regulator, each certificate corresponds to one megawatt-hour of renewable electricity. Here is an example of how you could be saving with STCs:
Here’s what you could be saving with STCs: | |
Type of Small Generation Unit | Solar |
Rated Power Output (kW) | 10kW |
Period | Seven Years |

A 10kW small generation solar system in Townsville QLD, will produce 96 STCs over a 7-year period. Therefore, you can receive a $3,648 saving overtime. 96 x 38 = 3,648 Try the STC calculator, here. |
