What Solar Rebates Am I Eligible For? 2024 Update

  • 1st April, 2024

Find out how to leverage solar rebates in 2024. Government subsidies and incentives are a major opportunity to cut your home or business’s solar or battery system costs.
A government solar incentive or rebate is financial support aimed at encouraging investment in solar power systems by individuals, businesses, and organisations. These incentives, often in the form of tax credits, grants, or rebates, alleviate the initial solar panel installation costs.

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) is an Australian Government program centred on tradable certificates known as small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Qualifying rooftop solar installations are granted STCs, which offer a subsidy to households and businesses adopting these renewable energy technologies.

The SRES is accessible to eligible households across Australia. The quantity of STCs you receive is determined by the anticipated electricity production of your solar system until 2030,

which hinges on factors including the system’s size (up to 100 kW) and the climate zone of installation.

Different states, territories, and certain local government areas offer subsidy programs aimed at assisting with the initial expenses associated with solar and battery installations. These incentives operate alongside Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).

What are STCs?

The calculation of these certificates is tied to the system’s projected renewable energy output. As per the Clean Energy Regulator, each certificate corresponds to one megawatt-hour of renewable electricity. Here is an example of how you could be saving with STCs:

Here’s what you could be saving with STCs:

State-by-State Solar Rebates:

Queensland Rebates

QLD Battery Booster Rebate

The Battery Booster Rebate gives Queenslanders the opportunity to receive up to $4,000 towards a home battery system. If you are eligible, the rebates will offset the upfront cost of purchasing and installing a home battery system with a new or existing solar PV system. The rebate will be open until the funding is exhausted.

Learn more about the Battery Booster Rebate program here.

Victoria Rebates

Solar Panel (PV) Rebate

The Solar Homes Program provides rebates of up to $1,400 towards the installation of solar panel (PV) systems. These rebates are offered to Victorians with existing homes, homes under construction, and rental properties.

Northern Territory Rebates

Solar Battery Install Rebate Program

The Home and Business Battery Scheme provides home and business owners in the NT with a rebate of $400 per kilowatt hour of useable battery system capacity, up to a maximum of $5,000, for the purchase and installation of a solar battery to either a new or existing solar panel system.

Find out more about the NT Home and Business battery scheme Here.

Western Australia Rebates and Schemes

Western Australia does not currently offer any additional solar rebates to homeowners outside of those offered nationally. It does, however, run a time-of-export buyback scheme for those who own solar panels, batteries, or an electric vehicle. This scheme is known as the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS).

New South Wales Rebates

Rebate Swap for Solar Offer

This offer helps homeowners on low incomes reduce their electricity bills by installing 3-kilowatt solar systems on their homes. Solar reduces your environmental footprint and can save you up to $600 a year on your household electricity bills. Individuals must meet eligibility criteria, including a pensioner or concession card.
