The Queensland government has set a target of reaching 1 million rooftops with solar in Queensland by 2020 – that’s only just over two years away! This target is designed to help lower electricity costs for families and businesses while creating more jobs across the state and ultimately protecting the environment.
How is the government planning on doing this? Various changes will be made to the Queensland regional feed-in-tariff and the arrangements in South East Queensland. Introduction of the T-FiT: Solar prices have been reviewed and made fairer by the introduction of a time varying feed-in tariff (T-FiT) across regional Queensland.
Eligibility expanded for the regional feed-in-tariff: Eligibility has been expanded in order to now allow for up to 30 kilowatts in size.
Feed-In Tariffs in South East Queensland will now be monitored: while existing arrangements will remain the same, these will now be monitored more closely to ensure offers are remaining fair for customers.
With the Queensland election looming at the front of everyone’s mind, we’ve stopped to consider some of the discussions.
The Queensland premier has made a pre-election offer with no-interest loans for solar and rebates of up to $2000 for batteries with a cost-of-living campaign. She has also vowed to cut $50 from electricity bills and announced Queenslanders will be able to apply for a rebate of $300 to purchase energy efficient appliances.
Solar Citizens is pushing for parties to commit to setting a renewable energy target for Queensland and to build solar and wind farms rather than focus on coal-fired power stations while providing better incentives for residents to switch to solar.
The Australian Conservation Foundation is also urging Queensland to “embrace a clean energy future” supporting commitments to investment in solar and battery. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
